K-Drama Review: Legend of the Blue Sea

Sanskriti Pun, Delhi

Legend of the Blue Sea is rated as one of the highly recommended SBS K-Drama. At first, I thought it was quite overrated, but then I decided to give it a shot. To my surprise, when I started with the first episode, I ended up binge-watching the entire drama in a span of just two days.

This drama is about a human and a mermaid that fall in love with each other, and the consequences that follow. Their love story continues from the Joseon era where their love couldn’t be accepted, to a modern day love story in Seoul.

Shim Cheong (played by Jun Ji-hyun) is a mermaid who takes up a human form and meets Heo Joon-jae (played by Lee Min-ho), a highly skilled con artist in Spain. Joon-jae eventually becomes interested in Cheong because of an expensive jade bracelet that she is seen wearing. Their journey in Spain is full of adventure and Joon-jae starts falling for Cheong. But sadly, they have to part ways and Cheong erases Joon-jae’s memories about her.

Joon-jae returns to Seoul, with a feeling that he has lost some part of his memory. Cheong is not able to wait any longer and also comes to Seoul to find Joon-jae whom she eventually discovers but now he doesn’t recognises her. As Shim Cheong now has no place to stay, she is given refuge by Joon-jae in his home where he lives with his con partners Jo Nam-doo (played by Lee Hee-joon) and Tae-oh (played by Shin Won-ho from the K-Pop Group Cross Gene). Throughout her journey in Seoul, Cheong struggles to keep her identity hidden from everyone. She also has to deal with Cha Shi-ah (played by Shin Hye-sun), her rival as she too is interested in Joon-jae.

As the story progresses, we see that the lives of Heo Joon-jae and Shim Cheong including the people around them are actually a reincarnation of a period in Joseon era. During the Joseon era, Kim Dam-ryeong, who is a town official, falls in love with Se-hwa, a mermaid but their love is not able to survive due to many obstacles. Here is an OST from the drama!

This drama is definitely worth watching, since we have the popular hallyu star Lee Min-ho who is well known for his k-drama ‘Boys Over Flowers’ and Jun Ji-hyun from another popular k-drama ‘My Love from Another Star’. Watching this drama will make you feel all sort of emotions, ranging from extreme laughing to endless tears. You can also watch this drama on Netflix.
