K-Drama Review: Descendants of the Sun

Anushree, Hyderabad, Telangana

My K-Drama journey began with the highly popular Descendants of the Sun that aired in 2016. Starring Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo in the lead, the 16-episode series garnered attention and praise upon its release. It was my friend who suggested watching the drama but declared upfront, “You will love this show, but Yoo Shi-jin (the character played by Song Joong-ki) is mine.” At that time, I brushed off the claim with a nonchalant, “Yeah, whatever. It is just a character. Relax.” But little did I realise that I was soon to be a part of this beautiful journey and be charmed by what I was about to watch.

So, what was so special about this drama?

Larger-than-life yet Relatable Characters

Let’s begin with Captain Yoo Shi-jin. Who wouldn’t fall for a handsome man in uniform who adores his woman, is respectable and is aware of his responsibility towards the people and his country? He’s perfect in every way. What more can one ask for? On the other hand, we have Dr. Kang Mo-yeon. A career-conscious woman who wants to achieve greater heights, she is full of life and dreams but doubts starting a relationship with a soldier. She is one of those few female characters one can easily relate to.

And not to forget Master Sergeant Seo Dae-young played by Jin Goo and First Lieutenant Yoon Myung-ju played by Kim Ji-won, who dedicate their lives to their jobs while trying to keep their troubled love life afloat. In fact, all the characters did a commendable job! Be it the Alpha team or the doctors’ team at Haesung Hospital, everyone adds flavour to the narrative. Oh, and did I tell you that SHINee’s Onew stars as a handsome doctor who knows his work well? You wouldn’t want to miss him, too.

Engaging Storyline

The show seems like a romantic journey, but as the story progresses, I, as a viewer, realised that it is much more than just a love story between people. It is also about friendship, honour, justice, patriotism, team spirit, and even karma (action) and one’s dharma (duty). The drama makes for a perfect bag of powerful emotions and practical reactions.

Heart Warming Music

From all the original soundtracks to the background music, the music perfectly elevated the show, and each scene appeared to be a beautiful piece of art. I really enjoyed listening to ‘Every time’ by Chen and Punch. The song made my heart flutter.

Brownie Points

The honest story line, genuine characters, powerful emotions that run deep, excellent cinematography, and effortless direction – everything was appealing. I could feel the emotions emoted by the characters. Everything seemed perfect! It’s a show that can be watched numerous times.

The episodes were so intense with interesting endings that I always craved for more. I binge-watched the drama, but even after it ended, the drama never left me. I continued to watch random scenes, episodes, and fan-made tributes for many days. I even read everything related to the show and the actors that was available on the internet. I wanted to know everything! And why not? I loved the drama so much. It is also available on Netflix.

It is one of those dramas I will recommend to everyone. Go, watch it! And if you have, tell us what you thought of it.
