K-Drama Review: Uncontrollably Fond

As the name implies, you can’t stop liking this drama even though it will eventually leave you sobbing and devastated. This drama is a story of two teenagers, Noh Eul and Shin Joon-young, who meet each other in high school and then come across having multiple encounters with each other through the time since they were teenagers till becoming adults; working to fulfil their responsibilities. But every time they meet each other, their fate has a different plan for them. The genre of this drama is centered on romance and melodrama starring Kim Woo-bin, Bae Suzy, Lim Ju-hwan and Lim Ju-eun, packed in 20 episodes.

Plot

Shin Joon-young, played by Kim Woo-bin, lives with his mother and is unaware about his father’s identity. He just knows that his father left him and his mother. One day, he learns that his father is a famous prosecutor and has his own family. Joon-young’s mother always wanted him to become a prosecutor like his father, so he starts working hard academically even though he is not really good at it; which makes situation difficult for him and he ends up breaking-up with his girlfriend.

On the other hand, Noh Eul, played by Bae Suzy; is the best friend of Shin Joon-young’s girlfriend. After their breakup, Noh Eul confronts her best friend and tries to get back at Shin Joon-young and come across each other’s path for the first time. The character of Noh Eul is kind and full of life. She lives with her younger brother and her father who is a street food seller. The story takes a turn when Noh Eul’s father dies in a car accident and the person who is responsible for that car accident is saved by bribing the prosecutor named Choi Hyun-joon. Noh Eul tries to meet prosecutor Choi Hyun-joon and asks him to reveal the truth, but he refuses to help. And since her father is no more, the loan sharks start reaching her out forcing Noh Eul to leave the city.

Few years later, Shin Joon-young is preparing for the entrance exam when he again meets Noh Eul. Meanwhile, Noh Eul gets some evidence that can reveal the truth of her father’s death so she calls prosecutor Choi Hyun-joon and asks him to come clean before she uncovers the truth by herself. As Shin Joon-young hears the conversation, he tries to stop and interrupt her from meeting the prosecutor for his own reasons, but it leaves Noh Eul hurt fighting for her life in an accident. Feeling guilty about hurting Noh Eul and hiding secrets from her, he gives up on becoming a prosecutor. As fate brings them together again, this time Shin Joon-young meets Noh Eul as an actor and is approached by her for a documentary.

Apart from the lead characters, there are two more characters who play an important role in adding twists and new turns to their story; Choi Hyun-joon and his son, Choi Ji-tae. As the story progresses with Noh Eul’s attempts to catch her father’s murderer, she also comes across a shocking truth about Shin Joon-young that leaves her devastated. As they both fight their own battels, Shin Joon-young finds himself responsible for Noh Eul’s struggles. He tries his best to fix situation so that he can end her sufferings. But, the future has something else in store for him. Years ago, for Noh Eul, Shin Joon-young made a deal and as fate comes across for both, it’s time for him to pay back.

Why you should watch it?

Whether they get back together or not, the climax of this drama is sure to leave a strong and long lasting impact on the viewer. The story of this drama is heart-breaking, so you can mentally prepare yourselves for lots of tears, but the beautiful end to this drama will also make you smile as you say goodbye to this heart-wrenching story. This drama does have certain moments that will tickle your funny bones, and some scenes will make you fall in love with the couple even more. This is one of the dramas where Kim Woo-bin’s acting as a lead has taken the spotlight; along with Bae Suzy’s perfect portrayal of Noh Eul. Watch the beautiful OST of this drama here:
