K-Drama Review: Go Back Couple

Monisha Mondal, Noida, Uttar Pradesh

GO BACK COUPLE: A 2017 Korean drama series starring Jang Na-ra and Son Ho-jun in leading roles. In Korean, it is known asGO BAEK BU BU” (고백부부).

Plot

This drama carried my interest in its unique storyline. Ordinarily, Korean dramas start with the blossomed romance between the lead cast and their followed hardships, but this drama starts with a divorce scene in the courtroom. Hearts filled with frustration and regret slips into a strange occurrence of time travel before they meet into their younger selves. The story starts from Choi Ban-do and Mah Jin-joo’s played by Son Ho-jun and Jung Na-ra respectively divorce and how it went down to pieces followed by a chance to go back in time where they could reunite once again to rewrite their not so perfect yet perfect “mistakes” they did in the past.

The series showed the awkwardness of getting through your first love, first date, rejections, friendships and dreams. It also focuses on the love relationship of a mother towards her daughter and her daughter towards her mother. At the same time, learning to ‘COMMUNICATE’ your feelings for your loved ones because communication is the key to great relationships.

Why I liked this K-Drama?

I liked how the series depicted the power of friendships. Through thick and thin, too high or low to craziness and sadness. Friends made their whole going back in time journey worthwhile. Where everything was fun, games and making it through school life where everything is smooth sailing, unlike their adult life.

I enjoyed how Mah Jin-joo had showed her motherly instincts to her friends. It felt like she’s teaching us how a mother’s love reminding us how our parents ache for their children. My tears could not stop when she finally meets her mom in the past. I also liked the part when Choi Ban-do’s fatherly instincts simply comes out when Min So-young had run away from home without him realizing he somehow became a father figure to her. Seo Jin, the couple’s baby, was also the source of their happiness. Without their child, their happiness was incomplete, and the baby was super adorable.

Why you should watch?

No character in this series was left behind. Every character had their stories. I genuinely felt that 12 episodes were too short because the series has taught me a lot of life’s lessons. I love how the second leads had understood that their unrequited love would never push through. They were even the ones who made the leads realize their love for one another. All characters have portrayed their part as if it was really theirs. It felt like their triumphs were mine as well! And it’s really awesome how characters can basically look young! How they can portray someone in the late 90s and someone in 2018. Jang Na-ra and Son ho-Jun portrayed their roles impressively that I even felt love sprouting and everywhere.

The last episode brought me into tears but it teaches us LOVE, rediscovering your love, whether it’s your one true love, your family or your friends, at the same time understanding with the means of communication. And a sweet reminder that never take everything that is in front of us for granted. Love one another! Thank you for being with me and to read my review, will soon come with another amazing K-drama review. Tell me your thoughts in the comments.
