K-Drama Review: Her Private Life

Madhulika Pathak, West Bengal

Her Private Life is a 2019 romantic comedy K-Drama that offers a glimpse into the backstage of one’s life. This drama is about a skilled chief curator, Sung Deok-mi of the Cheum Museum of Art. But that’s not all. Her life will unravel with just a small secret that she has to hide because of some specific reasons. Her secret is that she is an impressive and fully-fledged fangirl of White Ocean’s Cha Shi-an. And she also has a pretty famous fan site where she shows her remarkable adoration for her favourite Idol. But this drama is not just about the life of a fangirl but is also a rom-com. You must be expecting now that this drama is going to be about a fangirl and her favourite Idol love story or something like that but no it’s going to be a bit twisted. It will be unpredictable. Fun enough to make you feel the same emotions shown in the drama.

Main Cast

Park Min-young played the role of Sung Deok-mi / Sinagil. She is the chief curator of the Cheum Museum of Art who doesn’t get enough credits for her work which she did under Director Uhm’s guidance, who is the former art director of Cheum Museum of Art. She is also the creator of the fansite called “Sian is my way” and she hides her identity behind her website and even has a pseudo name Sinagil. She later falls in love with Ryan Gold.

Kim Jae-wook played the role of Ryan Gold / Heo Yoon-je. He is an unapproachable new art director of the Cheum Museum of Art. Talking about his personality the first word that can come to our mind will be unbending but his character changes along with the flow of the episodes and also, he is allergic to caffeine because of which he can’t drink coffee. He also has an eye for painting and is a great artist but after seeing Lee Sol’s painting, he develops Florence syndrome which prohibits him from painting which leads to his retirement. He is also famous in New York for his perspective on new artists. But after working as an art director at the Cheum Museum of Art for a while he develops feelings for Sung Deok-mi.

Overall Verdict

Now talking about my personal opinion on this drama. Well, I like all the dramas directed by Hong Jong-chan. He is an amazing director for sure! And this one is surely one of his masterpieces. Okay, so I will tell you why I love this drama so much. To be honest I felt as if I was on a roller coaster of emotions. And I could say that this is the drama that will be someone’s actual preference for the perfect rom com (opinions might differ too). There is nothing like melodrama; dramatic backstabbing or plotting; toxic, harsh or vulgar behaviour. But something that will make you feel love and passion yet keep you in touch with reality. There are so many lines that motivate me and touch my heart. Especially these two, “Art may be great, but it cannot be greater than a living human being. I am still greater than those paintings that are hung on that wall. Because I am a living being and I will continue to live” and another one is “It is easy to talk about value with just reputation and price. But recognizing the true value of an art piece isn’t something anyone can do.”
