K-song Review: ‘After School’ by Weeekly

Shalini Roy, Kolkata, West Bengal

Weeekly is a K-pop girl group under IST Entertainment comprising 6 members Lee Soojin, Monday, Park Soeun, Lee Jaehee, Jihan, and Zoa. They debuted on 30 June 2020 with their song Tag me. This was indeed a very promising debut and K-pop enthusiasts all around the world were amazed at the charisma of the girls. Everyone was hoping for an equally charming comeback when they dropped their album We Play on 17 March 2021, with the same cute and poppy concept which is quite refreshing in the current K-pop scenario. One track from the album which seemed to catch everyone’s attention was After School.

Concept

The title of the song is self-explanatory. The song is about friends meeting up once school ends. They are waiting for the bells to ring so that they can meet and have fun with each other, dance, take pictures, and go skateboarding. The storyline of the song is refreshing and so is the melody of the song. One thing that was well appreciated in the song is that all the members’ vocals were well highlighted.

Choreography and MV

The choreography also fit the group’s “cute concept”, which added to the charm of the song. This song was also recognized by people who don’t listen to K-pop much and they enjoyed swaying to its beat. It’s a very upbeat song with a very addictive melody that can make anyone fall in love with it. The music video has a total of 159 million views at present which marks their significance as a rookie group.

Popularity

The song made the girl group enter the World Digital Song Sales Chart for the first week in May, landing at rank number 21. It also topped Spotify’s Viral 50 Global Chart for three consecutive weeks beginning from April 12 and was within the top-three of the weekly chart for two consecutive weeks. This depicted their promising potential and their global impact as well.

Therefore, Weeekly has all the potential to be an upcoming famous K-pop girl group if treated the right way. The fans wish to receive such bops from the group as their promising debut had already heightened the expectations that they had fulfilled with their comeback album. Currently, the group comprises 6 members, after Shin Jiyoon left the group.
