K-Album Review: ‘DESIRE: UNLEASH’ by ENHYPEN

Writer: Srija Kakileti (West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, India)

Editor: Arpita Jena (Baripada, Odisha, India)

It all started when ENHYPEN announced their comeback at the Coachella stage with Can’t Touch You, But I’m Gonna Make You Mine on the screen. This announcement led to the release of their 6th mini album, Desire: Unleash. ENHYPEN is a 4th generation K-pop boy group formed through the reality show I-Land. The members of the group are Jungwon, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-Ki.

Desire: Unleash was released on June 5, 2025. It has quickly become one of the most defining albums of ENHYPEN’s career and a massive milestone following their historic Coachella performance.

The album opens with Flashover, a powerful intro track that immediately sets the tone. According to Jake, “this song holds the message of my desire for you getting stronger and burning into fire. We’ve never done this style before, so it was very different when we first heard flash over. It’s great as a first song and it opens up the album boldly, I hope you listen to it”.

It’s a striking beginning, with its bold energy and metaphorical weight. “Flashover” feels like a spark igniting the emotional core of the album, with the title track Bad Desire capturing the essence of the story of the album best: “I want to make you vampire”. The desire expressed in a chic way– “Jungwon”.

Bad Desire explores the group’s ongoing concept, delving into their symbolic universe and presenting a craving that is both dangerous and alluring, perfectly mirroring the darker tone of the album.

The third track, Outside “It is a charismatic hip-hop trap song with harsh raps and gang vocals – Sunghoon.” “Engenes likes it when we rap. I think the song came to completion because of the rapping, it’s very exciting- Heeseung.”

Next song is Loose (Korean version) “It’s the Korean version of the digital single released last April that’s about the deepening emotions that’s also restrained. We have the Korean and English versions – Sunoo.”

And the next song is Helium. “It’s my self-written song, Helium. The song compares the air I breathe in after falling in love to Helium. It’s a pop-rock song that expresses the feeling of floating into the sky. I wanted to show my sincere feelings to ENGENEs, and that’s the theme I wrote it with. I get choked up when I hear this song – Jay”.

Jay participated in different ways such as with producing, lyrics and guitar playing that’s why many members chose this as their favorite song on the album especially Jungwon mentioned that Helium was his favorite track in multiple interviews.

And the final song Too Close “It’s a lyrical and romantic song about the thrilling feeling that the person you’ve grown closer to might suddenly disappear – Heeseung”.

The concept photos for Desire: Unleash offer a striking visual narrative that mirrors the album theme with MAKE, YOU, MINE and ENGENE versions. Their title track “Bad Desire” 1st wins on M Countdown on June 12, then won the Music Bank with 15,416 points on June 13 and 1st place on Inkigayo, marking ENHYPEN’s first ever win since debut.

ENHYPEN is already rising ENGENE’s standard with “With or Without You A Heaven Without you must be like hell With or Without You A Hell Where I Embrace You Must be like Heaven” translated lyrics for the Korean version. It has an English version as well.

ENHYPEN recently dropped “Outside” MV on June 23rd. Outside moves away from supernatural metaphor and dives into pure cinematic tension. The video opens with a chase sequence, as ENHYPEN members are pursued by their shadow counterparts, who represent internal desire and conflicts. It was already loved by ENGENES

Please share your favorite song from the album in the comments section.
