K-Drama Review: Suspicious Partner

Writer: Andrea Fernandez (Kollam, Kerala, India)

Some actors entertain you, and some quietly stay with you. Ji Chang-wook belongs to the latter for me. Watching Suspicious Partner felt less like watching a character and more like witnessing someone breathe vulnerability, strength, and warmth into every frame.

Suspicious Partner is a romance and thriller-based drama that aired in 2017. The drama narrates the story of a prosecutor who meets a judicial trainee and then takes up her case for being wrongly accused of murder.

Ji Chang-wook plays the male lead role as Noh Ji-wook,a prosecutor who always strives to bring justice for his clients, having endured trauma himself. Nam Ji-hyun plays the female lead role as“Eun Bong-hee,” who is a judicial trainee who is being accused of murder.

Eun Bong-hee finds out her boyfriend was cheating on her with her colleague, and later at night, when she returns to her apartment, she finds her boyfriend murdered in her apartment and finds no witnesses or the criminal, and she reports it to the police.

Eun Bong-hee is arrested for suspicion of murdering her boyfriend, as there was no evidence from witnesses or the criminal, and her colleagues also accused her that she is the murderer as she was the first person on the scene.

Noh Ji-wook was the prosecutor who was the person who prosecuted Eun Bong-hee, and after questioning her, Noh Ji-wook found that there was no proper evidence claiming that Eun Bong-hee was the murderer and Eun Bong-hee was set free with the help of Noh Ji-wook, but still Eun Bong-hee’s name was not cleared as a murderer, and both of them took the case to clear her name and to catch the real murderer.

During the investigation, Eun Bong-hee remembers a small but disturbing detail—a soft humming sound she heard on the night of the murder and again during her arrest. There had been a blackout that night, and even though she couldn’t see the person clearly, the sound stayed with her. Slowly, it turns into an important clue.

The second lead roles are played by Choi Tae-joon as “Ji Eun-hyuk” and Nara as “Cha Yoo-jung,” and both of them are also prosecutors. Noh Ji-wook and Ji Eun-hyuk have been best friends since college. Noh Ji-wook and Cha Yoo-jung were in a relationship, and one day Noh Ji-wook found that she was cheating on him with his best friend Ji Eun-hyuk, that had left Noh Ji-wook in trauma, and he tried to be alone always.

As they were finding clues to the case, they recognized that they were being chased by the murderer and that there were other similar cases, and they found that this case was also connected with other in some way and as the situations got worse as they were being chasedNoh Ji-wook and Eun Bong-hee started living together and slowly both of them started falling for each other.

Even though  Ji Eun-hyuk had cheated Noh Ji-wook with his girlfriend, he regretted doing it, and he decided to follow Noh Ji-wook, supporting and cheering him, and he also joined in solving the case. As they try to solve the case, Noh Ji-wook and Eun Bong-hee find out their past were related.

I really enjoyed watching this drama of the chemistry between Ji Chang-wook and Nam Ji-hyun was really amazing their love and how they had protected each other and their cuteness as a couple was really an amazing thing to watch and how the second leads especially Choi Tae-joon character had influenced the drama, even though he had betrayed his friend he tried to make it up by following Ji Chang-wook and supporting him and he also joined them for solving the case.

The other supporting casts were also really amazing. I really loved how all of them had created fun moments in the drama. The drama did give the viewers an ending that was expected, even though there were twists. The drama is a must-watch because of its romance, comedy, and thriller elements.

  • This review captures the exciting mix of romance, mystery, and thriller elements in Suspicious Partner so well. I love how the article explains the chemistry between the leads and the evolution of the plot without spoiling major twists. It feels like a drama that keeps you guessing while also tugging at the heartstrings. Definitely makes me want to rewatch it with fresh perspective! 🎬💫

  • Suspicious Partner stayed with me long after it ended. Ji Chang-wook’s portrayal of Noh Ji-wook felt deeply human, and the chemistry with Nam Ji-hyun was beautiful. The balance of romance, humor, and suspense made every episode engaging. It’s one of those dramas that quietly leaves a lasting impression.

  • Great review, Andrea! I love how you started by saying Ji Chang-wook 'breathes vulnerability' into his roles—that is the perfect way to describe his performance in this drama. You really captured how the show balances the heavy trauma of the past with those cute, lighthearted moments between the leads. I also appreciate that you highlighted the second lead, Ji Eun-hyuk; his journey from betrayal to trying to make amends added such a unique layer to the 'found family' dynamic in the office. Thanks for sharing this!
This review makes me want to go back and rewatch Suspicious Partner immediately! I totally agree about the chemistry—Ji Chang-wook and Nam Ji-hyun have such a natural spark that made the romance feel real rather than scripted. You did a great job explaining the humming/sound element of the mystery; that was one of the tensest parts of the show for me. It’s definitely a top-tier 'rom-thriller' that has a bit of everything. Well written!"
