K-Song Review: Good Night (Healing Song) by Standing Egg

Writer: Vidhi Gosain (Delhi, India)

No one truly knows why we resonate to a song on a personal level, but it is undeniable that we do. We listen to something, maybe it’s a tune, a melody, the lyrics of a song, or the voice of the singer, and are immediately entranced by it. A single listen is enough for us to lose ourselves in the world created by the song. It is not always necessary for someone to have a single favourite song; different emotions and different situations bring out the need for a different song, a different voice to be our anchor.

Songs can evoke a range of emotions within us and reveal feelings that we may have hidden deep within. For me, a song that has been my saviour during these harsh times is Good night (Healing song) (잠 못 드는 그대에게)  by Standing Egg (스탠딩 에그)

Good night is a soft, melodic song with beautiful lyrics and a soulful voice. When these factors are combined, it becomes one of the most beautiful, calming songs I’ve heard. Released in 2019 as a single, this song has been by my side through all my tough times. It may not be for dancing, but it surely will help you calm down, leave those worries behind, and welcome you to a beautiful dreamland.

I still don’t remember how I came across this song, but I believe I found it in my life right when I needed it. Whether it’s the instrumental version or the one with the melodic voice, both have left a deep impact on my heart and have been a constant repeat on my playlist.

There is no doubt that the song is underrated, and so is the group Standing Egg. The South Korean indie acoustic pop band has proven its talent time and time again by ranking on charts with little to no promotion. The band consists of three members, pseudonymously named — Egg 1, Egg 2, and Egg 3. The three of them produce and compose music and feature guest artists for their songs and performances. It is safe to say that once you listen to them, they surely are going to become one of your top favourite South Korean indie artists.

The song is five-minutes of pure healing, with beautiful and mesmerising vocals and lyrics that make you feel as if you are on a voyage to the island of happiness, love, and acceptance. With lyrics such as —“Follow me, let’s find the star that will heal your sorrows,” you can’t help but find comfort in the words of the singer. Every word that comes out of his mouth, blended with this soft melody, makes even the hardest times slowly melt away.

Our minds tend to wander off into unknown places, and this song is the voice you need as your calling to stop overthinking and to rest. A tired, exhausting day is enough to make one feel drained of every inch of energy, and Good night (Healing song) does what most songs only hope to do — heal you

The song, as the name suggests, helps one fall asleep, which comes to you easily thanks to its warm melody. Even the lyrics portray this thought throughout — “so let this song you’re listening to become the pillow you can hug,” trust me when I say I’ve never before heard such beautiful words. The comfort and sincerity that is overflowing from the singer’s voice make you feel as if you are dreaming and your head is on a fluffy cloud.

If anything, this song is a lullaby from the heavens. Listening to it, especially at night while you are struggling to fall asleep, will make you feel safe and secure. As someone who often finds it difficult to fall asleep, the lyrics have become a comforting shield against insomnia. I still can’t put my finger on why I love it as much as I do, but the truth is this song isn’t just a song, it’s a warm kiss that radiates comfort and safety.
