K-Album Review: Chill Kill by Red Velvet

The pioneers of the dark and cynical K-Pop concepts, Red Velvet, return to their eerie selves to give one of the most anticipated comebacks of 2023!

2023 was a smashing year for girl groups, which took center stage in K-pop and gave us some of the best music releases, concepts, choreography, and much more. The third-generation Queens Red Velvet served us no less with a full studio album. Bringing back the dark and classy quintessential tones of what makes them Red Velvet, the album is a perfect amalgamation of maturity with boldness. Let’s take a look at the tracks that make up this album.

Chill Kill

The title track, “Chill Kill,” is a dark ambient dance-pop song that reflects on shared moments of happiness and sorrow during trying times. Characterized by the classic Red Velvet sound, the song features emotional string melodies, gliding bass, dreamy bells, and synths. The members showcase their vocal prowess through ethereal vocal layering over the resplendent instrumentation.

The music video shows the group sharing a small cottage where they look back at all the good memories and the struggles they have been through. Haunted by the monsters of their past, they decide to put an end to it all by packing up and setting their cottage on fire. They flee the cottage, only to encounter the police along the way.

Knock Knock (Who’s There)

Expanding the dark ambient theme from the previous track, Knock Knock (Who’s There) borders on bittersweet temptation and the allure of the unknown. It explores the mystery behind a closed door that could lead to something better or worse, while expressing a desire to break free from monotony and routine.

The devil and angel represent the inner conflicts involved. With vocals as haunting as the sirens, the members call out to the listeners to venture into the unknown.

Underwater

This track reminds us why Red Velvet are the undefeated queens of R&B among K-pop girl groups. The sophisticated tones, mellow synths, and smooth vocals make the song flow effortlessly, evoking the weightless feeling of swimming underwater.

The lyrics are a beautiful example of storytelling, portraying a love that surpasses typical standards; a love so intense, sweeping, and incomparable that no other feeling can ever come close. The singers expect reciprocation of their love and intimate desire.

Will I Ever See You Again

A beguiling synth-pop track that captures the tenderness of longing and uncertainty about the future, “Will I Ever See You Again” features a synth-driven instrumental chorus and a laid-back melody. The lyrics express the desire to hold on to a loved one with the beguiling vocals from the girls that leave us wanting more for the song.

Nightmare

This dark ambient R&B track is probably one of those songs that feature a lot of juxtaposition within its instrumentation. Following a reminiscent of a Christmas carol, a complete with signature holiday bells, the chorus sounds as evocative as a song suitable for Halloween. True to its name, the lyrics portray the feeling of being trapped in an eerie nightmare where the singers cannot even trust themselves yet still hope that it will end.

Iced Coffee

Comparing the feelings of love to Iced Coffee, this track explores the intoxicating romance that has left the singers in a whirlwind of emotions and consumes their thoughts. Harmonizing on the slow R&B melody, the members, yet again, show their flourishing vocals in this bittersweet ballad.

One Kiss

Picking up the tempo, “One Kiss” demonstrates how the group possesses the power to captivate anyone with just one kiss. The choppy instrumental flow with an imposing bass is reminiscent of the sound of Western girl groups in the early 2010s. The ad-libs and background harmonization in this particular track are impeccable. The girls prove they can deliver a wide range of notes, especially in that iconic bridge sung by Joy.

Bulldozer

Delivering a powerful message about breaking free and being unapologetically yourself, “Bulldozer” encourages listeners to break the rules that prevent them from achieving what they deserve. The hook, “What can I break?”, is instantly memorable against the synth-driven undertone. Taking the tempo down a notch, this track gives the album the groovy, energetic punch it needs.

Wings

Continuing the message from the previous track, “Wings” asks their listeners to spread their wings and fly now that they have broken free from societal norms. This groovy R&B track features heavenly harmonization and ad-libs from the members, especially Wendy, on the paradisaical instrumentation.

Scenery

The album ends with the slow, swaying notes of “Scenery,” a beautiful ballad that feels like a private message between Red Velvet and their ReVeluvs. Its imagery resembles a picturesque landscape painted on a sheet of white paper, carrying a meaning that only the members and their fans can fully understand. With the group’s 10th anniversary approaching, the song serves as a heartfelt love letter to fans, expressing gratitude and promising continued love.
