K-Song Review: KICK IT BY NCT 127

Chandra Joshi, New Delhi

NCT 127 is the second subunit of the South Korean boy band group NCT formed by SM Entertainment. NCT stands for “Neo Cultural Technology” and is the first group in K-Pop history with unlimited members. At present, NCT has four units; NCT U, NCT 127, NCT Dream, and WayV (WayV is based in China).

‘Kick It’ music video was released as the lead single from NCT 127’s second studio album called Neo Zone on March 6, 2020. According to their agency, the album was already pre-ordered for over 5,30,000 albums. It was the group’s highest number of stock pre-orders. Member Jungwoo also marks his return to the group from this song!

‘Kick It’ is a hip-hop and R&B genre music. The title of the song is ‘Kick It’ because the song is about how to overcome your fear and trauma. It’s about becoming a hero of yourself by doing that. The lyrics of the song are very inspirational. The song secured 9th rank for one week on the Billboard K-POP Hot 100. The choreography has terrific martial arts-based dance moves. When you will first see the MV, you will see two ironed people dancing; they are Johnny and Jaehyun. These two underwent an intense workout for that particular moment. The song also has silhouette dance moves which are very impressive and unique in the song. It’s a totally energetic dance song with powerful hip-hop and martial arts dance moves.

The background for the music video is yellow and black which is very splendid and we all know that NCT is known for its great visuals. The song will give you great energy from the very beginning to the end. The starting dance move is very catchy and you will love it. The song is a homage to Bruce Lee because when the song starts, it quotes, ‘Let me introduce you to some new thangs, bass kicks swingin’ like I am Bruce Lee.’ You will also hear some other things related to Bruce Lee in the music video.

Now about the overall choreography of the song, it was fantastic and the rain dance is a whole new thing in the song. About the appearances of the particular members, I really liked Jaehyun, Yuta, Mark, Taeyong, Doyoung, and Johnny in the music video. Jaehyun’s outfits, Taeyong’s facial expressions, Yuta’s elegant gesture, and Johnny’s appearance; the song is full of swag and extensive energy. The song has an amazing rap part by Mark and Taeyong and high-pitched notes by Haechan and Taeil. Their outfits are impressive and their looks nailed the song. So if you want to start your day with an energetic song that will light up your mood and makes you swing and you want to release stress and want a fresh start, ‘Kick It’ is for you.
