K-Webtoon Review: Ghost Teller – Humans Are The Scariest

Sameen Murtaza, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh

Ghost Teller is a horror webtoon created by QTT. It’s an official English translation that started in 2018 and concluded on July 25th, 2020. We have all heard stories from humans, but now let’s hear from the ghosts themselves! Changing from conventional storytelling, we see ghosts talking about how cruel humans can be. With greed, jealousy, fantasy, foul play, and whatnot, humans are no less than monsters. The main characters consist of ghosts, with the central one being a grim reaper. However, it turns out that their past was much worse than their present. This webtoon is technically a collection of many short stories told by the said ghosts, often having depressing and tragic ends.

This webtoon is not advised for the faint-hearted since it contains many violent and gruesome tales.

 Characters

The main characters are six in total, including the very dashing Grim Reaper. Surprisingly, each of them has been born as humans who, due to the unfortunate situations of their lives, ended up as ghosts. Contrary to their creepy appearances, each of them was innocent and loving. Someone was a loving husband and father, another a beloved idol, a child just learning to live, a caring wife, etc. But all their happiness was short-lived because the humans around them were terrifying. They were ready to kill, cut, and hurt anyone who got in their way. Their selfish desires made them hurt the people closest to them. Yet they thought guilt was only temporary while happiness was forever, though in reality, it was quite the opposite.

It seemed that telling their tragedies and helplessness to others was a way for the ghosts to feel better, like a form of therapy, a catharsis. To be fair, once you read the stories, you will also feel sorry for them and wonder how cruel we humans can be.

     Plot Progression

The pacing is perfect. The colour palette is as dark yet vibrant as it could get to give an eerie feeling. Certain episodes also have the spookiest of audio as a bonus. Every tale is divided into 4-5 episodes each. It takes a while to realize that these stories are about the speakers themselves. Even worse is the feeling of similarity. The fact that many of these situations were extremely realistic in terms of depicting the negative emotions of humans. How we react when things go wrong. How easily we blame others without considering their perspective. Most importantly, appearances are deceptive, and yet we still wish to believe in what we think is correct. Humans rarely accept their own mistakes since it is so easy to blame others for them.

What makes this stand out?!

These stories are heartbreaking and could really mess with your mind. So, even though they are great, I wouldn’t recommend them to someone who hasn’t been doing well mentally. These are the kind of unforgettable stories that once you read them, you won’t easily forget. However, if you’re a horror maniac, they will be right up your alley. Even when you think the plot is going to be predictable, they throw the craziest plot twists right at the end!

Mind-blowing and twisted, these stories are written to make you think. What does it truly mean to be human? And are we the most pitiful or the scariest ones? If you can handle all the emotions that this 92-episode-long webtoon will put you through, then I highly recommend binge-reading this.

Ghost Teller always gave me chills because the real monsters were never the ghosts but the humans, they’re honestly scarier.
