“The world is a small place to live in,” the invention of technology proved the above statement correct. From the comfort of our own home, we can take a world tour, right? Due to technical advancements, there are many interesting ways to keep ourselves entertained, one of which is games, especially internet games. Do you know that there is a total of 20,000 (or more) internet cafés in South Korea as it is considered a powerhouse when it comes to gaming. Even the origin of Internet cafe culture originated in South Korea, many might be unaware of it. Now the fun part is this is just one among many other interesting inventions that South Korea has given birth to.

Technological Innovation and South Korea’s Economic Growth

Innovation and technological advancement have fueled South Korea’s economic growth in recent decades. Some of the inventions have had a substantial impact in creating current cultural trends around the world, while some have not, but have nonetheless contributed to the nation’s position in history by their status as true pioneering products of human intellect and invention.

Historical Contributions to Science and Technology

From ancient to modern times, people of South Korea have made significant contributions to science and technology. With one of the world’s largest electronics industries and most dynamic economies, South Korea is currently playing an active part in the global Digital Revolution. Innumerable incredible innovations were born in South Korea, and many of us are unaware of them. Let’s take a look at some of the Korean Innovations you may not have known about:

MP3 Player

We’ve come a long way in terms of how we consume music. We stopped carrying MP3 files on CDs, flash drives, and music players, a few years ago. The world has shifted to Spotify, Apple Music, etc. Yet have you ever wondered what the turning point was in the evolution of music from the CD era to the Spotify era? It was the MP3 Players. The world’s first commercial MP3 was MPMan F10 developed in 1997 in South Korea and the same year world’s first car audio hard-drive-based MP3 player named the MP32Go player was also released.

With each passing day more advanced versions of players were released in the market. Later in 1999, the Samsung SPH-M2100 was produced in South Korea, which was the first mobile phone with a built-in MP3 player.

Smartwatches

While “smart” gadgets that can be worn on the body are currently popular, few people are aware that this advancement was the result of a century-long effort to enhance the capabilities of watches. Samsung released the SPH-WP10 in 1999, which was the world’s first watch phone. It was a wrist-worn cell phone that could make calls for up to 90 minutes. The watch phone combined the functions of a digital watch with a wireless communication headset.

Smartphones

Today, there hardly be someone who doesn’t use a Smartphone, but few are aware that the majority of Smartphone advancements were made in South Korea. A few of them are as follows:

Samsung Electronics (Seoul) introduced the Samsung Galaxy Round; which was the world’s first curved display Smartphone, on October 10, 2013. Samsung was the first company to release a flexible phone.

In 2006, LG Electronics released the LG Prada, the world’s first full touch screen mobile phone and the first mobile phone with a capacitive touch screen.

In 2019, South Korea became the first country to implement a 5G network on a broad scale. In the same year, Samsung Electronics released the Galaxy S10, which was the world’s first 5G Smartphone.

3D Hologram

Most of the holograms rely on optical illusion rather than true holographic technology. Researchers have been working on real holographic imaging for years, and now the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea has succeeded in creating the world’s first 360-degree colour hologram in 2015. The special fact of this 3D hologram is that you don’t need headsets to see them. Also, the 3D hologram implements the images in red, green, and yellow on top of a tabletop-type digital display system. The project was handled in collaboration with various businesses and organisations including, LG Display, Silicon Works, Yunam Optics, Korea University, Kyungpook National University, and others.

Contactless Card

Contactless card is a known feature for all of us, but the first contactless payment card was first introduced way back in 1995 by the Seoul Bus Transport Association for electronic ticketing. They were known as UPass cards and were used to navigate South Korea’s transport system. Since then, contactless smart cards have grown in popularity for use in payment.

Social Networking Site (SNS)

Cyworld, based in South Korea, was the world’s first mass SNS. This was also the first in the world to offer personalized home pages and automated mechanisms for contacting friends and relatives, paving the way for sites like Facebook and MySpace to emerge. One unique feature of Cyworld was that it allowed its users to arrange, manage, and prioritise their relationships according to the hierarchy system consisting of three ranks, thus matching the old system of Korean society. But eventually, the use of Cyworld started declining and Facebook came into the limelight.

South Korea has managed to deliver an economic miracle in less than half a century. From past to present they have offered everything that is needed for technological advancement. Not just in the case of technology but South Korea has been the first to introduce many new concepts in the markets. Like milk cartons, Inflatable cheering instruments, food storage containers, instant coffee mix (all mixed in a single package), and the list goes on.

Do let us know in the comments section if any of these technologies are used by you and if you know that these were invented in South Korea.
