Questions Prepared by: Jasmine Khan (Dubai, UAE)

Tarsvinder Singh Sihra, aka, Taz Singh is an actor of Indian origin, born in Glasgow, Scotland. His journey in the arts began after his college studies when he discovered a deep passion for acting. At the age of 19, he secured representation with his first agent in London, opening doors to auditions for television roles and commercial projects. Taz’s career recently reached a new milestone with his appearance in the music video “LOST!” by RM, a member of the globally renowned K-pop group BTS. This project has garnered worldwide attention and critical applause. He has also been working in Japan and is set to release another Japanese drama in July.

Graduating with an impressive 4.0 GPA, he earned a degree in Economics. Beyond his academic achievements, Taz is also a polyglot, with a TOPIK certificate in Korean, an HSK certificate in Mandarin Chinese, and conversational skills in Japanese. Let’s dive into this interview to learn more about his acting journey, career, and upcoming projects.

Annyeonghaseyo! Sat Sri Akaal! Nice to meet you Mr. Taz. How have you been?

A pleasure to meet you! I’m just flying around a lot. Been blessed. Nice to meet you.

Could you share with our audience what sparked your interest in acting and how did you transition from studying economics to pursuing a career in the arts?

Sure, yeah. My passion for the arts began nearly 12 years ago. I came from a very academically focused background, but at some point in my life, while watching films and TV series, I wanted to explore the world of art a bit further. I have also played various musical instruments throughout my life. But acting was my spark back then, and I had a lot of curiosity, and it was something I wanted to go further in this endeavor. Despite that, I was keeping up with everything and I was very passionate about studying Economics and Business and trying to understand how the financial world works. So, it was more about just my curiosity into things that you know helped me get more immersed into those kinds of worlds and when it came to acting, it was it was never different.

You’re impressively multilingual, with certifications in Korean and Mandarin, plus conversational Japanese skills. What motivated you to pursue these languages?

It was honestly due to my life experiences. I had many Asian friends while growing up and during my school years. Later on, I learnt Chinese martial arts like Wing Chun and things like that. So, I learnt a bit of Mandarin along the way and became decent back then at the time. Spoke a lot more. The same reason for the Korean language as well. Back when I was 18 or 19, I started speaking Korean and was able to hold decent conversations with my Korean friends at that time.

With Japan now, because I’m now based in Japan from Tokyo, working on things, my Japanese has improved a lot more. It is one of those that if I do not speak the language for a certain period, I do get a bit rusty or I start to forget. But practice makes perfect, I guess.

The LOST! MV from BTS’ album Right Place, Wrong Person was recently shown at the Cannes Lions Festival and won an award for cinematography in 2024 at the Berlin Commercial Awards. How did you land the opportunity to work on this project? Could you talk more about the character you played in the MV?

Initially, I received the audition through my UK agent, and we have some emails regarding that communication. I think I went through two auditions. After my first audition, I waited about seven days before receiving an email about another audition, which confirmed my participation. It was only later that I found out that they had released the information and anybody working with RM in that music video, so I didn’t know until the very end. It was very confidential but yeah, I got the confirmation, and I flew out.

In terms of my character, I play one of the show hosts. There’s me and another co-TV host who gives this kind of vintage feel of you know, “Welcome to the Lost Show” as we explore and go into Namjoon’s brain in some sense which is like being in the music video. It’s quite metaphorical, quite deep itself but yeah it was good, and it was a lovely experience to work on.

How was your overall experience working with BTS’ RM? Do you have any memorable moments from the shoot?

I have my little moments. First off, the experience was absolutely lovely. I enjoyed every minute of working on this project. Working with everybody, the whole creative direction, and just the artistic project in itself and the inspiration behind it; everything was absolutely amazing. Yeah, I enjoyed working with San Yawn and the creative ideas he brought to the table. It’s about a long time ago but it was it was a night shoot when we were working on set, and I remember coming off the stage for one of the takes and just by surprise there was like pizza for all of the cast, and RM just took care of us like that. So, I was very thankful and grateful. It was just a really great time.

I don’t know how to really say it; I think it was my favorite project today and everything I’ve worked on simply because of the whole vibe of everything. It was super chill, super friendly, super warm. Just everything was great. It was all blessed.

LOST!’ MV has won four categories under the Music Video Section at the CICLOPE Festival, 2024. Did this project influence your own artistic journey in any way?

I think before when we were doing the MV, I knew a lot of effort went into it so I had a feeling it was going to do quite well when it came out. Of course, so we didn’t know how they were going to edit it and everything. But I was excited and all the other co-stars were also very excited for its release back in May 2024 to the rest of the world. I knew it was going to be popular, but I didn’t know how many awards it would win. So that itself has also been quite expectational and phenomenal. And it’s been a very exciting time and I’m very happy to hear the good news. And yeah like I said it’s a very artistic project so I’m glad it got the recognition.

You’ve recently attended the Busan International Film Festival where the Right Place, Wrong Person documentary was screened. How was the reception at the festival? Can you share any insights or behind-the-scenes moments from the documentary that fans might not know about?

When I attended, I remember I had some business things to do on that day. As soon as I got off the train station, where a lot of the ARMYs and fans were waiting, they caught me by surprise. So that was a surprisingly exceptional time for me, and it was really nice.

In terms of the documentary itself, I believe they’ve kept it under wraps because this was the first showing in Busan. I think they’re going to release it to the West later on, possibly in December, but the details are confidential, so I can’t talk much about it at this stage. I did enjoy watching it; I thought it was very interesting and very, very real in that sense. But yeah, being in Busan for the first time at the Busan Film Festival was just an amazing, lovely experience.

You have recently featured in a Bollywood movie, ‘Ulajh’ and also worked in the upcoming movie ‘Tehran.’ How was the experience working on Bollywood movies different from overseas projects?

I would say that things are different in the way they are managed, especially with scheduling and getting information in advance. Sometimes those aspects can be a little different. It’s not that it’s necessarily good or bad; there are pros and cons to both approaches. Each country I’ve traveled to has its own way of doing things, and I think being adaptable to accepting and embracing those differences is what matters most in getting the job done professionally.

For me, it took a while to get used to how things work in Japan, but once I got the hang of it, I became quick and adaptable, and now things are working well. I’ve enjoyed working on Indian projects like ‘Ulajh’ and ‘Tehran.’ There’s a lot happening in the Bollywood world, and I’m open to exploring that. For now, I’m just focused on what’s coming my way and trying to do my best with that.

Looking ahead, how has your experience so far shaped your aspirations in the entertainment industry – in India or overseas? Are there any specific types of roles or projects you’re now eager to pursue?

I want to act, and I’ve had some projects come my way and people have asked me this recently. There’s a particular romance story we might go forward with. Personally, I’m very keen on wanting to play some kind of action antagonist at this stage. I think if I could give life to a character like that, with a very deep story, it would make the audience think that, okay, he’s an antagonist, but you can’t really feel that he’s doing wrong. Something like that which blurs the lines. I think those characters are interesting, and I would love to get a chance to play something like that.

What can fans expect from you in the near future? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you can share with us?

At this stage, I have ‘Tehran,’ which is set to release in India at some point. I worked on that project a few years ago. There’s also another project I’m in talks about—a collaboration with someone in the Japanese music industry who has access to all the karaoke songs and CDs. This one is a bit of a secret, but I’m working on something like that. By the end of this year or maybe early next year, I’ll have more updates. I also have another Japanese drama that I will focus on early next year. It’s just an exciting time for me in Japan, with a lot happening right now!

The Indian BTS ARMY has been excited about your presence in the music video ever since the video came out. Do you have any message for the fans in India?

Indian ARMYs, fans everywhere, I love you guys so much! Actually, you have shown me so much warmth. You’ve been so encouraging and lovely. I’ve had so many experiences when I’m just walking down the street, and people come up to me and give me gifts or other wonderful things. You also warmly love and encourage me, both as a human being and as an artist, to just keep doing more and keep doing my best.

I really appreciate all the genuine love like that, and I’m just lost for words in that sense. I’m lost for words because you guys are just so amazing, and I really appreciate it. I embrace that a lot. Thank you!
