Whenever we think about South Korea, or when we ask anyone what comes to their mind with South Korea? I suppose everyone would agree with me that K-Pop is the first thing that comes to mind. I think it’s justifiable to feel that way because K-pop is essentially Korea’s soft power. Everyone means everyone, including small kids, teenagers, adults, and even older people, are well aware of what K-Pop, K-Idols and K-Drama are.
K-pop has undoubtedly contributed to the spread of Korean culture worldwide. K-pop has achieved worldwide recognition as a truly global phenomenon due to its unique combination of captivating melodies, slick choreography, beautiful music videos, makeup and style. Just like any other country, there has been a massive surge in the popularity of K-pop in India. over the past couple of years, K-pop has primarily influenced Indian audiences in fashion, beauty, language and many different ways. Here are some aspects which I think K-pop has greatly impacted on the Indian society.
Language learning
The immense popularity of K-pop has made the Korean language the fastest-growing foreign language in India. Many individuals, particularly from the younger generations, are embracing the language to better understand their favorite K-pop songs and the dialogue in K-dramas, moving beyond reliance on subtitles. This trend reflects a growing fascination with Korean expressions and cultural nuances. A survey conducted in December 2021 by Duolingo revealed that Korean ranks as the fastest-growing foreign language in the country, highlighting the increasing interest in learning it. Over the past few years, King Sejong Institutes in India have also reported a significant rise in enrollment, further emphasizing K-pop’s substantial influence on this linguistic enthusiasm.
Beauty and Skincare
Thanks to K-pop, K-drama, and K-beauty, also referred to as the Korean beauty goods and skincare regimes, have become extremely popular in India. Seeing their favourite idol’s flawless skin, fans also desired to look like them. I guess that is why the demand for Korean beauty products in the market has been increasing tremendously day by day. K-beauty has paved its way in the Indian market, brands like Cosrx, Innisfree, Laneige, and Etude House are some of the skincare brands which are very popular among Indians. They are money-friendly, effective and offer deep nourishment and care to the skin.
Fashion and Style
Through K-pop, Korean fashion style has had a big impact on the Indian people. Numerous Indian K-pop fans have adopted Korean fashion trends in terms of attire, accessories and hairdos, particularly among the younger generations. Korean fashion is famous and popular. Fans try to dress up like their idols and also get motivated by their dressing sense and style. Nowadays, people prefer comfort styles like baggy jeans, loose-fitting T-shirts with jeans, flannels, and bucket hats are also famous, all thanks to the K-pop idols.
Travel and Tourism
Indian fans of K-pop have developed a fascination with South Korea as a tourism destination. I think every K-pop fan, just like me, wants to travel to South Korea in the hope that they will get a chance to see their favourite idols. Many K-drama viewers are also motivated to travel to the country to see the places featured in their favourite K-drama or want to visit the filming sites to see the culture that is portrayed in the programme. South Korea is also becoming the first choice of Indian students. There might be some other important factors behind this, but I think K-pop has also played a vital role in their decision to choose Korea as their study destination.
In conclusion, I just want to say that K-pop has greatly impacted our society and youth. Whether it is language learning, fashion or skincare. Even the Indian government has set up the India-Korea start-up HUB to bring the Indian and Korean startup ecosystems closer and to facilitate joint innovation between the two economies. After all, a dose of bilateralism is just what is needed to hurtle K-pop further into a cult in India.
