The South Korean entertainment and media industry has made significant economic contributions over the years. As it has grown, it has had a strong impact on the country’s GDP, trade, and tourism. Today, South Korea has successfully broken down barriers that only a few countries and their industries were able to overcome in the past, promoting their products in numerous countries. With widespread support and appreciation for media content from South Korea, they have managed to reach nearly every corner of the globe.
The entertainment and media industry mainly consists of several sectors, including K-pop, K-dramas, K-movies, video games, webtoons, and manhwas. Let us rewind a few years to explore how the industry has grown.
The industry first took off in the 1990s when Korean dramas and movies started gaining popularity in Japan and China. Later, this popularity began to spread across Asia, causing the start of the Hallyu wave or Korean wave. The Hallyu wave gained more momentum globally in the mid-2000s as internet users increased and more social media platforms started to exist, providing access to people, regardless of their geographic location, to K-pop music, thus marking a feat and making way for grander things.
One of the grander things was that in 2012, with PSY’s Gangnam Style, the Hallyu wave augmented, further creating a lasting impact that put the South Korean entertainment and media industry on the map for many years to come. From then on, the industry witnessed exponential growth across diverse sectors.
To discuss the impact of this growth, we look at the contributions made towards the key economic indicators that assist in the evaluation of an economy.
The entertainment and media industry has successfully transformed its growth into job opportunities. As the industry has grown over the years, it has created millions of job opportunities and thus employed people in various supporting roles, ranging from technical staff to managers to background workers. Furthermore, the industry indirectly supports auxiliary services like marketing and advertising, fashion and merchandising, tourism and hospitality, etc. Thus, creating more space for these sectors to grow simultaneously with them. Furthermore, these sectors play a vital role in supporting and amplifying the entertainment and media industry’s economic impact and cultural influence.
There is no tangible produce from industries like Entertainment and Media. They gain their value from the intellectual property (IP) rights, copyrights and trademarks. In terms of K-pop, the IP consists of songs, lyrics, choreography, instrumentals, etc. Thus, with the rise of K-pop, there was a consequent growth in the IP and patent economy. In 2020, IFPI reported that South Korea had the 6th largest global market for music, with high volumes of copyright-protected content exports. This market has captured a valuation of $1 billion in 2023 and is predicted to reach $5.2 billion in 2033.
The industry’s global success has bolstered tourism in South Korea. People who appreciate Korean culture and enthusiastic fans visit the country from around the world to experience the K-culture they have witnessed only through the media. The tourists visit locations popularized in K-dramas and K-pop songs to recreate the moments of their favorite celebrities in the exact location. The South Korean government realized the significance of these spots and translated them into tourist-friendly locations to attract more crowds.
The South Korean government has actively acknowledged the industry’s success and shown its support through various policy interventions and initiatives. Their appreciation is visible through awards, recognition, international promotion, and copyright protection.
Another economic factor that can be attributed to the success of K-pop and K-dramas is the massive increase in exports. There has been an increase in Korean product consumerism as the popularity of Korean products rose after increasing endorsements by Korean celebrities. In 2021, the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism, K-Content exports reached a whopping amount of $12.45 billion. This exportation not only generates revenue but also promotes South Korean culture across the world.
Thus, we can conclude that the Entertainment and Media Industry has evolved into a cultural and economic powerhouse. It has significantly contributed to the GDP, job creation, tourism and international trade. Its impact goes beyond the economy by effectively propagating the country’s culture and image and emerging as a soft power to support international relations and diplomacy. This has set an example and a standard for other economies of the world to support their own variety of industries because you can never know how impactful they can be and how well they can benefit the country!

From BTS to PSY, South Korea’s entertainment industry has reshaped the economy and culture. It fuels tourism, creates jobs, and exports K-culture, turning Hallyu into a worldwide phenomenon.
It’s impressive to read how K-pop, K-dramas, webtoons and more have become serious economic drivers — not just fun cultural exports. The section on job creation and how many people are employed in the supporting industries really got me; it shows the ripple effect of what I’ve been watching as a fan. This made me appreciate how big the impact really is.
What an incredibly well written piece! I really appreciated how the writer explained the South Korean entertainment industry not just from a cultural lens but also from an economic standpoint, connecting it to GDP growth, tourism, and international trade so seamlessly. The mention of IP rights and export statistics added a lot of depth and credibility to the article. As someone from economics background it’s fascinating to see how creative industries like K-pop and K-dramas can become such powerful economic drivers. Truly an engaging and well-researched read!
