K-Drama Review: Good Casting

Writer: Shruti Nirmal (Mumbai, Maharashtra, India)

Editor: Divya Sonawane (Pune, Maharashtra, India)

Good Casting (previously titled as Miss Casting) is an action comedy and a parody of spy fiction about three tough National Intelligence Service (NIS) agents of South Korea who go undercover for a secret mission. After working behind the scenes for a while, the three agents are suddenly assigned a once-in-a-lifetime assignment to save their country.

Plot

The three women are up against the formidable enemy, Michael Lee, who became a national-level problem as they lost many of their agents due to his interceptions. The NIS is being closely watched by the government officials, and this mission becomes their top priority. It has sixteen episodes, aired on SBS from April to June 2020.

Main Characters

“She is a master of negotiating and placating.” Hwang Mi-soon (played by Kim Ji-young) worked in the NIS for 24 years as the top agent who was assigned many international missions and has great experience in dealing with people with words. After retiring for a while due to circumstances in their final mission, she was brought back to build a new team.

“IT specialist, supported field agents for years…” Im Ye-eun (played by Yoo In-young) is the maknae of the team. She was called a white agent who was meant to be a rookie; however, she has done many great jobs supporting other agents for a while. She is more than just a working woman. She is very skilled with computers and hacking into the most secure database.

“Craziest agent in the department…” Baek Chan-mi (played by Choi Kang-hee). Ye-eun is the brain, Mi-soon is the mouth, and Baek Chan-mi is the body. In situations where words cannot convey, her fists do the work. To locate an industrial espionage group’s member, she spent three years trying to find the message left behind in the prison cell that would reveal her identity. In the end, she convinced the foreign member to reveal the information.

Yoon Seok-ho (played by Lee Sang-yeob) is a rich businessman who went to top schools. The intense training to inherit the company prevents him from gaining much romantic experience. As a result, Yoon Seok Ho becomes suspicious when he meets Baek Jang Mi, a close doppelgänger of Baek Chan Mi, his unrequited first love from his teenage years, and keeps a close watch on her. He also portrays a very humorous character throughout the drama.

Dong Gwan-soo (played by Lee Jong-hyuk) is a member and team leader of the female trio. Despite being strict, he is warm and presents great teamwork with the three of them. He was assigned to make up the group of the three top agents. Dong Gwan-soo remains in the shadows and provides any assistance, as well as the orders for the missions. In the drama, he is known for saying clever things. Baek Chan-mi and Dong Gwan-soo had a complicated relationship in the past, which was revealed in the first episode. They keep all the matters of the past aside as they value their work greatly.

Kang Woo-won (played by Lee Jun-young), a celebrated idol with an arrogant and self-centered attitude, suffers from amnesia after being kidnapped. He begins to rely on Ye-eun, who has disguised herself as the secretary for the mission. Woo-won soon gets involved in the case as well. It is also quite obvious that the two of them are bound to develop a love line in the later episodes. He played a childish character at the beginning, but it was nevertheless humorous to see him. Fan service was not forgotten!

Why should you watch?

Action-packed drama

Despite being a spy parody work, the staff did not hold back with thrilling scenes. Baek Chan-mi performed some jaw-dropping scenes in the drama, instilling a level of power in you as you watch it. The female leads worked very hard on all the action scenes, and they didn’t disappoint.

Strong Women

Among the antagonists of the drama, the actress Han Soo-jin plays a cameo role of a secretary for Il Kwang HiTech, and it was witnessed how she was able to show amazing moves in some of the scenes. Kang-hee and Soo-jin had a big fight in the drama.

Character Reunion

It was interesting to see the casts forming a great group in the later episodes, not only in terms of romance but also humor. Especially our three female leads.

Notable OSTs

An action-comedy drama also needs an equally upbeat OST. The drama’s first and lead track is FEEL IT!, by rapper Cheetah. Lee Jun-young, other than acting in the drama, also sang one of the sweetest OSTs with LABOUM’s So-yeon titled Let’s Make Love.

Lee Sang-yeob also tried out his vocal talents and sang an OST titled Red Bag, which has some sentimental meaning in the drama. Lee Sang-yeob has paved his way to become an all-around entertainer!

Overall, it was a pretty great drama when it was being aired during the COVID-19 era. The drama’s most popular scenes were also featured in many reels, including the famous scene where Hwang Mi-soon, Choi Kang-hee, and Im Ye-eun walk in style, like girlbosses. Even though there was a potential for a Season 2, it seems that it has been considered a complete drama.

My Favorite part of the drama

Choi Kang-hee! Her overall girl boss character is something that has influenced me a lot. Not to mention that she has pretty good eyes. I am not sure how many viewers of the drama noticed, but Kang-hee looks like a pretty doll. She could scare the bad guys.

I watched Good Casting and loved how the three women go from desk-job agents to deep undercover operatives—it felt fun and empowering. The scene where Baek Chan-mi and Hwang Mi-soon walk in like ‘girl-bosses’ really stood out for me. Some plot bits were definitely silly, but the action, humour and the trio’s chemistry kept me hooked. Glad I gave it a chance!

Wait, so it’s basically Charlie’s Angels meets K-Drama comedy? Count me in!
The fact that they go from desk jobs to undercover missions sounds like the perfect setup for chaos. And Baek Chan-mi being described as the ‘body’ with her fists doing the talking? Iconic behavior. Definitely need to check this out for the girl-boss vibes!
