10 BEST SONGS OF PENTAGON YOU MUST KNOW

Writer: Kaamaakshi Bhat (Zirakpur, Punjab, India)

Editor: Khushi Vaid (New Delhi, India)

Pentagon debuted in 2016 under Cube Entertainment, and since then, they have been dominating the K-pop industry with their amazing, top-notch songs. Here are some golden gems from them that you all should discover!

Like This

Like This is the title track of their 4th mini album ‘Demo 01’. It is composed by Pentagon members Hui and FlowBlow. It features a variety of sounds, blending up-tempo beats with synths. The song is powered by vocals with a lot of ad-libs and high notes. It talks about when we fall and are clueless about what to do next, don’t give up and stop, just keep running and fighting. The chorus lyrics go as:

“I won’t cry anymore

Scream it to the world, oh yeah

Even if I fall and my knees bleed

I’ll keep running like this.”

It is a motivational song, and as a Universe (Fandom Name), listening to it now makes me emotional, thinking about all the hardships they have been through, and yet they managed to rise again. Kino participated in making the choreography, and it suits the song so well. It’s powerful and so expressive.

Violet

It is the B-side track of their fifth mini album ‘Demo 02′. It is composed by Kino and Nathan. Pro tip: Use earphones while listening to this song. The harmonies start with diminished chords, which are so soothing to the ears. Then the drums and rap commence, which gradually start giving a chill vibe. Once the chorus begins, you get to enjoy various instrumentals and the bubbly vibe of the song. The lyrics of the chorus are:

“ Your words were as beautiful as a flower

I remember the color you had

Can I go back to the moment?

When I could hold you tight again?”

Once it’s past halfway, you arrive in a calm and composed vibe. In the MV, you can see the members showcasing different stages of a relationship from the start of dating to the end, which is a breakup, and then being strangers. If you like cute songs and aesthetic MVs, then this is your go-to song.

Shine

Shine is the title track of their 6th mini-album, ‘Positive’. There is a huge chance you have listened to this song if you have been in K-pop around 2018. It was the golden era of K-pop, and Pentagon really shone in it. Shine is a really cute and catchy song that makes you wanna dance to it whenever you listen to it. It starts with a cool piano tone, and the percussion starts with an amazing rhythm.

When you get into the pre-chorus, you can hear the vocal harmonies and intense percussion, and it’s superb. The chorus is an uplifting part of the song with more vocal energy. Then the bridge comes with Yuto’s rap with a great low tone. It’s the best part of the song for me, along with Jinho’s high note, combined at the end of the ridge. The song talks about members having a single-sided crush on a person and how they are losers who cannot confess to that person. The chorus lyrics go like this:

“I’m a loser who loves you

Yes, I’m a fool

I’m a leech, an outsider to you

You’re the only one I want in this world.”

The MV has a cute and bright concept with a school as a backdrop. In short, this song showed the boyish charms of Pentagon, and it suited them well. Shine is the most well-known song of the Pentagon, with approximately 259 million views. It quickly moved up the charts and gave fame to Pentagon. When they performed it live, even non-fans knew the lyrics and sang the fan chants along with Universe (fandom).

Dr. Bebe

This song is the title track of their first full-length album ‘UNIVERSE: THE BLACK HALL’. The song has an intense vibe that you cannot help but listen to on repeat. It talks about 4 cycles of love, i.e., love, fall, hurt, crazy. They have used the metronome in the song to express the continuity of the vicious cycle of love that they are trapped in. The song starts with a march and chanting sound with the words “love, fall, hurt, and crazy”. The drop from the pre-chorus to the chorus is pretty fierce. The high notes in the chorus with the e vowel really describe the vocal power of Pentagon. The lyrics of the chorus go as:

“Hey Dr. BeBe (Could die for you)

If I have only you BeBe (Could go crazy for you)

Stuck inside your wall, struggle to escape, get hurt

But can’t get away from the echo.”

Overall, it is a well-balanced and well-produced song.

Daisy

Daisy is the title track of their 10th mini album ‘WE: TH’. It is composed by Nathan, Hui, and Wooseok. This song talks about the heartbreak one feels after a breakup. The word “Daisy” which is the flower of hope, has been used as a metaphor for love and progress, with a focus on the meaning that describes how one will eventually be burned by that love. The song has a ballad chord structure however, it also has upbeats in it. In short, it is a sunny song on a rainy night. This song makes you feel like you have gone through a breakup even though you haven’t. The lyrics of the chorus are:

“A pure white petal of a daisy

Inside I’m crazy again

Like an idiot, I, to death, I

loved you, but this is what I get.”

The cover of this album has been drawn by Pentagon member Kino. It is very rare to find artists drawing their album cover, which is very appreciative.  The choreography of this song is also really addictive.

Beautiful Goodbye

It’s a B-side track of their 10th mini album ‘WE: TH’. It talks about wanting to say goodbye and to end their relationship but if they have to end it, then they should do it thinking about the good memories they had together. It is a sad breakup song similar to Daisy, but it is a softer version. The lyrics of the chorus are:

“Never say goodbye, I’ll

Wait here forever, please

Never say goodbye, if you have to leave

Leave only beautiful memories.

This song will totally make you emotional, and you might end up crying. So, please keep tissues handy whenever you listen to it.

Eternal Flame

It was the last OT9 song we got from Pentagon. The song is written by Kino, Nathan, Wooseok and Yuto. Universe is also credited as a songwriter of this song which makes it very special for the fandom. It was released on 25th December 2020 as a Christmas present to the fans. The song describes all the struggles of Pentagon and how they have managed to come this far, even though they have fallen numerous times. The Korean title for Eternal Flame is 불꽃, meaning firework, but also translates directly to Fire Flower. The lyrics of the chorus are:

“We’re brightly burning flames not withering flowers

Even if we fall, We get up again.”

This song is dedicated to themselves and their fans. It has way much deeper meanings than you can imagine.

Runaway

Probably the first song of Pentagon I got introduced to, thanks to VH1. It is an EDM song composed by leader Hui and the production team FlowBlow. It is a continuation of a serious theme that was showcased in Like This. It talks about never giving up and to always keep going. Lyrics of the chorus are:

“I never say give up

I can’t give up

You can’t trap me

In this frozen world anymore.”

Spring Snow

This song has a special place in the Universe fandom. This song was written by Kino to reminisce about the good memories during the Shine era, as it snowed when they were filming the Shine MV, even though it was spring. Since then, snow has been a huge part of the Pentagon’s life. It also snowed when they got their second win. They also performed it on Road to Kingdom. The song has rock elements and is a cheerful song however, the Road to Kingdom version is an emotional one. The lyrics of the chorus are-

“Will the spring snow come?

Will it snow again during that spring you love?

Would it be okay if I loved you?

Shall we dance like we did in those happier times?”

I bet you will be smiling ear to ear while listening to this song and watching its live performance.

The Game

Be ready for some uniqueness in the world of K-pop. You can hear Jinho singing opera at the start of the song. They have sampled ‘Lascia Ch’io Pianga,’  and have revealed their ability to accept fate and relax a little bit. The song has a mixture of Italian opera and electric rock. The song talks about the spontaneous nature of life. It talks about how we should keep moving forward even if we don’t know how things will turn out in the end. The song talks about playing “a funny game” which means taking bold risks, because if we don’t take risks, then we won’t know what we are capable of. The lyrics ofthe chorus are:

“Let’s play funny game

Na-na, na-na-na-na, na, na

Save more, just run and blow it all away.”

You might fall in love with this song once you listen to it, so be ready to be mind-blown.

Some honorable mentions: Sparkling Night, Bad, Can You Feel It, Pretty Pretty, Feelin’ Like, Humph!, Naughty Boy, Nostalgia, Gorilla.

Pentagon’s discography is full of extraordinary songs. Honestly, writing a few words to describe these songs isn’t enough. The emotions one feels while listening to these songs are indescribable. I hope Pentagon releases more songs like this in the future. Till then, let’s listen to these amazing songs while waiting for them to release new music.

  • Really enjoyed how you chose a diverse range of songs to showcase Pentagon’s versatility—from the bright, defiant energy of ‘Like This’ through the emotional depth of ‘Daisy’. The bit about ‘Eternal Flame’ being a heartfelt gift to fans stood out to me. One curiosity: if you had to pick just one song from the list to introduce someone completely new to Pentagon, which one would you pick, and why?

  • I’ve listened to a few of PENTAGON’s songs here and there but never really went deeper into their music. After reading this, I’m kind of tempted to check out more — they seem to have such range in their style. Shine has always been stuck in my head though, no matter what 😅.

  • I really don't know about them a bit like I never even heared about them how can it be possible like I know am not know about k pop much but at least I know some of the popular band like BTS, BLACKPINK, TWICE, AESPA but I don't know abot them well thankfully now I know about them and the fandom name is really so nice UNIVERSE. And there some songs description I really love to listen them now specially that 'shine' .

  • I have listen to one or two songs of pentagon but never explore this much. Listening these songs will make you feel many emotions. Specially ' the game' telling us that we should move in our life no matter what and their song runaway about never giving up.

  • I have not listened to Pentagon's songs but this well-articulated article made me realize that I am missing out on an amazing group and their songs. I should definitely give them a listen!

  • i am not so familiar with this group but I have heard the song 'Shine'. It's so uplifting with great choreography. Such a thoughtful post

  • A very well-written and comprehensive overview of Pentagon’s discography. The explanations, lyric highlights, and emotional context behind each track were beautifully presented. This is the perfect guide for anyone wanting to explore their music. Excellent work to the writer and editor.

  • I really enjoyed how you curated such a diverse range of songs to highlight Pentagon’s versatility from the bright, defiant energy of *Like This* to the raw emotional depth of *Daisy*. It beautifully shows how the group can shift between moods and concepts while still sounding unmistakably like themselves. The mention of *Eternal Flame* as a heartfelt gift to fans especially stood out to me; it added a touching, emotional layer that reminds you of the strong bond between Pentagon and their listeners.

  • Great group with iconic songs. The meaning of songs and the lyrics are so beautiful. The article presented each song so nicely. 💕
