Lee Ji-Eun (이지은), globally known by her stage name IU, was born on May 16, 1993, in the neighborhood of Songjeong-dong, Seoul, South Korea. IU (아이유) became interested in pursuing a career in the entertainment industry at a young age and began taking acting classes.

Her family’s financial situation deteriorated soon after her elementary school years, and they eventually relocated to nearby Uijeongbu in Gyeonggi Province. For over a year, she and her younger brother lived apart from their parents in a studio room with their grandmother and cousin in abject poverty.

DISCOVERING HER PASSION FOR MUSIC

IU discovered her passion for singing in middle school and decided to pursue a career as a singer after being applauded for a performance she gave at her school’s sports competition. She went to 20 auditions but failed them all, and she was also duped by multiple bogus entertainment companies. With the exception of Korean literature, her blossoming career resulted in decreased attendance and grades at school. Hence, IU decided not to pursue post-secondary education alongside her singing career after graduating from Dongduk Girls’ High School in 2012.

In 2007, she signed with LOEN Entertainment and relocated to Bangbae, Seoul.  Despite the possibility of being placed in a girl group, she made her solo debut in 2008 after only ten months of preparation. Before her debut, the company chose the stage name “IU” from the phrase “I and You” to represent the unifying power of music between people.

After training for ten months, IU released “Lost Child (미아)” as her debut single. She performed the song live for the first time on the music program M Countdown on September 18, 2008, making her debut as a professional singer. Regarding the performance, IU recalled that the audience had hurled insults at her, while she was initially discouraged by it, she now views it as a beneficial experience.

In November of that year, IU was named “Rookie of the Month” by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism for her debut EP Lost and Found. However, the album was not a commercial success.

“I think I’ve been climbing up the ladder little by little over the years. My first album failed, but I’m grateful for that. If I had become successful as soon as I made my debut, I wouldn’t appreciate my staff members and the popularity that I’m enjoying now.”

IU said in an interview in 2011 when questioned about netizens claiming that she became a star overnight.

With the success of her 2011 albums, Real+ and Last Fantasy, IU cemented her girl-next-door image and established herself as a formidable force on the music charts of her native country. She is now not only referred to as “Nation’s Sweetheart (국민 여친 )” but also “Nation’s Little Sister (국민 여동생 )”

Her first self-composition was “Hold My Hand (내 손을 잡아)” for the K-drama The Greatest Love in 2011. Given that she wrote the song not for herself but at the request of the drama’s producers, IU found the experience challenging because she had to match the drama’s upbeat tone.

One of the core themes explored in IU’s music is consolation, which The Korea Herald noted could be found in the songs “Through the Night” and “Dear Name”, both from her fourth studio album Palette (팔레트).

IU’s vocal range is frequently discussed as soprano by vocal analysts and experts. In an academic paper, acoustician and professor Myung-jin Bae discusses IU’s vocal range as a soprano by analysing her song “Good Day (좋은 날)”. Her vocal ability is frequently complimented for also possessing mezzo-soprano qualities. According to Monique Danao from the South China Morning Post, IU can quickly transition from a “sweet” voice to “hit powerful notes.”

SUCCESS AND RECOGNITION

The singer-songwriter has also received several awards for her acting, including “Best New Actress” at the 2014 KBS Drama Awards for her performance in You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin. 7 Daesang awards, also known as grand prize awards, have been bestowed upon IU by various award shows. This includes 3 Melon Music Awards Daesang and 2 Golden Disk Awards Daesang. Daesang is widely regarded as the most prestigious award in the Korean music industry.

IU was named in the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list in 2012 as one of the most influential people in South Korea, and has been mentioned five times since then. She was also honored at the 2015 Pop Culture & Arts Awards, hosted by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, for her influence and success in the music industry.

A PHILANTHROPIST

IU has been an ambassador for South Korea’s National Police Agency in their anti-bullying campaigns in schools since February 2012; she was made an honorary member of the police force in 2013 before being promoted to an honorary senior police officer in 2014 for a two-year term.

The philanthropist later established a scholarship at her high school alma mater in 2016 after donating there on a regular basis for several years. The scholarship, dubbed the “IU Scholarship,” is intended to assist four graduates from low-income families.

In 2018, IU provided ₩20,000,000 in financial aid to five college students, assisting with room and board.  And in 2014, 2018, and 2023, she took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge, an internet challenge to raise awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Following her role as Lee Ji-an in the hit drama My Mister, IU donated ₩50,000,000 to the Deaf Senior Citizens Support Center in 2019, inspired by her role in which she had to learn sign language. She also donated ₩10,000,000 through the Seocho District Office for those in vulnerable social groups and the elderly living alone, ₩100,000,000 to commemorate her 11th anniversary, and then another ₩100,000,000 at the end of that year to the Korean Foundation for Senior Citizen Support. Her philanthropic efforts earned her a spot on Forbes’ “Asia’s 2019 Heroes of Philanthropy: Catalysts for Change,” where she was the youngest person on the list.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Korean Medical Association reported that IU donated 3,000 pieces of medical protective clothing valued at ₩100,000,000 and approximately 4,600 cooling vests valued at ₩100,000,000 for nurses, according to the Korean Nurses Association.

In August 2020, she also donated ₩100,000,000 to the Korea Disaster Relief Association to assist flood victims. In May 2021, she gave ₩10,000,000 to Yangpyeong County to help single parent families and grandparents raising grandchildren, and a total of ₩500,000,000 to the Korea Pediatric Cancer Foundation, the Korean Single Mothers and Families Association, the Comprehensive Support Center for Elderly Living Alone, the Child Welfare Association, and the Yeouldol Association to help children with rare diseases, as well as the Purme Foundation, a non-profit public interest foundation that focuses on assisting the disabled. And as of December 2024, IU has donated over 6 billion won since her debut.

From overcoming hardships in her early life to becoming one of South Korea’s most beloved and respected artists, IU has established herself as a remarkable talent and a symbol of hard work, humility, and philanthropic efforts. She is admired by the world not only for her excellent artistry but also because of her kindness and generosity.

  • What I love most about IU is her emotional sincerity and versatility. She has this rare ability to make every song feel personal, like she’s quietly sharing a piece of her own story. At the same time, she’s not limited to just one style, she can go from soft, comforting ballads to powerful performances effortlessly.
On top of that, her growth over the years really stands out. She’s not just a singer but also a songwriter and actress (like in Hotel Del Luna), and she keeps evolving while still staying genuine and grounded.
