K- MOVIE REVIEW: Miss & Mrs. Cops

Aanchal Yadav, New Delhi

The movie, Miss & Mrs. Cops (걸캅스), directed by Jung Da-won, was released in the year 2019. It is about two police cops who set out to fight against the heinous crime that has been taking place against women in South Korea wherein men are using spy cams to record women against their permission. Starring in this movie are Lee Sung-kyung (이성경) and Ra Mi-ran (라미란) who are playing the role of the cops. This dynamic duo is everything you’d want them to be; powerful, smart, beautiful, and funny. Mi-yeong (Ra Mi–ran) is a former police squad officer who starts working at the Public Service Center after her marriage. Ji-hye (Lee Sung-kyung) is Mi-yeong’s sister-in-law as well as a rookie policewoman who works at the same center.

Filled with twisted turns, the movie will keep you on the edge of your seat and will fill you with anticipation. Ra Mi-ran, being a versatile actor, perfectly captivates the role assigned to her while adding her style to it. And as for Lee Sung–kyung, she is a very flexible actress who is easily able to adapt to the role she is given, not to forget the amazing roles that she has played in famous shows such as, ‘Cheese in the Trap’,Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok–joo’ (Read review here). Special appearances by Ha Jung–woo, Ahn Jae-hong and Sung Dong-il  are also seen in the movie.

The movie focuses on the dark side of South Korea and throws light on the ‘date rape culture’ that is going on. It also tackles the reality of how women face discrimination in whichever sector they work in and how weak they are considered to be. After the release of the film, even though it smashed box office records, Korea JoongAng Daily reports reported that more than three-quarters of the moviegoers were women. Online reviews also showed a clear-cut difference between men, who rated the film 1.6 out of 10, and women, who rated the film 9.6 out of 10. It turns out men get offended for getting called out for being misogynist and sexist. Who would’ve guessed?

Why you should watch?

As an individual who’s a feminist and supports women empowerment and also loves to laugh, this movie never fails to give me a serotonin boost along with a good laugh here and there. It also makes me realize how powerful a woman can be if she wants to. So, if you are like me or a person who loves to watch comedy and action together in a movie, then this is the perfect movie for you. What do you think? Tell us in the comments.
