The city of Naples beat to the rhythm of K-pop on June 3, 2025. The colorful Italian southern town, with its keen sense of art and architecture, as well as its passionate population, became the platform for something electric: the Italian Finals of the K-pop Dance Fight Fest (KDFF) 2025 at COMICON Naples. It was not an ordinary dance contest. It was the swan song of regional activity throughout Italy. The local champions of Sicily and Piedmont converged in Naples to decide on the only game of this year to determine who the best K-pop dance crew in Italy would be.

A Cultural Wave That Became a Movement
K-pop culture has had its own following in Italy. Whether they are grandparents addicted to romantic K-dramas or teenagers recording dance covers of BTS and NewJeans, the Hallyu wave has engulfed Italian homes and hearts. Something that was foreign is now understood: K-pop is played on Italian radio regularly, there are fan clubs around webtoons, and people share Korean phrases as secret codes, among others.

The Comicon Naples was among the very first of the Italian festivals that actually acknowledged and embraced this cultural wave. It spent whole chunks of time in its earlier days devoted to Asian culture: screening Korean films, hosting webtoon exhibitions, and presenting a cosplay workshop using Korean character designs. Nevertheless, with the creation of the K-pop Dance Fight Fest, Naples emerged as the central hub of K-pop dance in Italy.

The Beginning: From a Community Competition to a Nationwide Sensation
The K-pop Dance Fight Fest started as a small and cordial competition in Naples, where it was co-organized. However, its effects became rampant soon. Speaking at a recent interview, Silvio Franceschinelli, who is the music director of the COMICON and a creator of KDDF, explained,
It was nothing more than a minor contest, and that the number of people participating in the contest kept increasing. Before long, other festivals in Italy began calling to get me to set up their version of my festival. It was a straightforward format where dancers would go onstage to dance to choreographies that were inspired by their favorite K-pop groups. But how to do it? The tournament gradually evolved into a national tour whose foundation was the support of major Italian pop culture festivals: Etna Comics (Catania), Levantefor (Bari), Torino Comics, and BeComics (Padova). Every regional champion won the opportunity to compete in the national finals with a battle staged on the biggest platform of them all, at COMICON Naples.

The Big Day: Italian Finals at COMICON Naples 2025
On June 3, the finals of this year were held, gathering the ten best dance crews of K-pop Italy, each selected from another famous regional contest. The place was eventful: a 1,000 m² main stage belonging to the organization of COMICON (with more than 6,000 seats). The size and the intensity were something the dancers had not encountered earlier.

The crews came dressed up in fancy clothes, becoming their K-pop idols within a few seconds with almost impeccable synchronization. Months and months of training, some even practiced every day.
The dancing was not the sole competition. The basic judgment criteria were:
- Choreographic difficulty
- Technical execution
- Make-up and costumes
- Stagecraft and mastery of the stage

Nothing was insignificant, not even the cutting of a turn or the twinkle in the eye of a dancer.
Stories Behind the Performances
The occasion was moving, and the humanity driving the event was what made it so uplifting. Many dancers had traveled for over 10 hours by train or bus to reach Naples. They were Italians from big cities, small towns, and in between. Some were on part-time jobs, and others were students. However, on that day, they were all dancers, connected by their passion for K-pop.
The events backstage were marked with nervous energy. At the last minute, there was the putting on of makeup, the pre-acting warm-up, and even group hugs. Friends and parents in the crowd cheered as they waved light sticks and carried homemade banners. One group had a 70-year-old grandmother in the crowd and would even clap with each beat.

Judging the Best of the Best
COMICON invited an international jury of honor to judge the finalists:
Jay Kim
K-pop legend Jay Kim is a Korean choreographer who has danced with superstars such as Luhan, Jay Park, and The Boyz. He studies at famous studios such as 1Million and Millennium Dance and has conducted workshops in 55 countries. His participation in the Italian finals as a judge gave the event an added value of credibility and excitement.

So Audrey
As a representative of Young Nation Dance, the French group that took the CATANIA 2024 European final, So Audrey added to the panel the required combination of skill and experience. She was able to give the competition a new standard with her eye for detail and the polish of her performances.
Jinnytty
Jinnytty, a very popular Korean online streamer who uploads her wanderings and Korean culture to the Internet, straightened the crowd and raised its energy. She not only judged, but also played as a solo artist and together with the K-ble Jungle group served as a reminder that the stage is a place to enjoy and be in touch with one another.
All in all, the jury presented not only its notes but also provided comments, support, and praise for the efforts engaged by the Italian crews.

The Winners and What Comes Next
A vigorous session of performances was followed by the decision of the jury as to the victorious crew, which will now represent Italy at the European finals in Catania within Etna Comics. There, they will rival French, Spanish, Polish, Czech, Austrian, Estonian, and Slovakian teams in what has been dubbed the biggest K-pop dance competition in Europe without Korean idols.
To the winners, it is not just an award. They receive:
- A professional photographic session
- Invitations to other European festivals
- A round-trip to go to a partner event as a guest crew
And above all, exposure to the European K-pop community.

Final Reflections: Naples Leads the Way
The Italian finals of K-pop Dance Fight Fest 2025 demonstrated that the interest in Korean culture in Italy is more than a fad; it is alive, enthusiastic, and creative. Naples, which has a history of heart and hospitality, has turned out to be the ideal setting for this cultural festival.
As the final crew took their bow and the audience clapped, it was clear that this was more than just a performance. It was a period of unity when the spoken language of our origins and residences held no significance. It centered on the beat of the music, the spirit of the community, and the power of the melodies to create a sense of a smaller world.
Naples was Italy to the K-pop fans, dancers, and dreamers of Italy. The stage was only the start of their destination.

Wanna do that dance challenge 😍
This story made me smile — it’s amazing how K-pop isn’t just a music trend anymore but a full-on cultural movement in places as far away as Italy. From regional contests to a grand national final, seeing fans turn into dancers (some travelling hours for it!) speaks so much about dedication and love ❤️. I hope one day something similar happens in India too — I’d love to watch (or even join!) a Dance Fight fest like this.
