Diya Jain, Delhi: The world offers an endless amount of fresh and breathtaking art in the form of movies, films, songs, paintings, and much more. But we often find ourselves cocooned in our world, to an extent that the majority of cultures remain alien to the average individual. Even in the case of diverse musical cultures, as a fan of K-pop, I’m often asked the reason to choose and appreciate the music I listen to. After all, it is in Korean, they say. But the beautiful thing about music that most fail to notice is that one does not need to understand the language in order to enjoy it.
Ashley Kumar, Delhi: I have been a K-pop enthusiast for years, but I had never dreamt that I would see K-pop artists perform live in my country. But this dream came true when VAV came to India for a series of concerts and fan meets starting May 31, 2019.
Yashi Priya, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: Bangtan Sonyeondan, widely popular as BTS, is a seven-member boy band from South Korea that debuted in 2013 with their lead single ‘No More Dream’ from the album 2 Cool 4 Skool. The artists were under Big Hit Entertainment, a small company with humble beginnings. As the name of the group suggests, the septet desire “to be resistant to bullets, so it means to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that are aimed at the adolescents like bullets, to preserve the values and ideal of today’s adolescents.”
Mehak Sharma, Delhi: Boy group INFINITE made their comeback as OT6 on January 8, 2018, with their third studio album titled Top Seed. The long-awaited and highly anticipated comeback came after Lee Ho-dong, better known as Hoya, left the group in 2017, and Kim Sung-kyu recovered from his injury. The album consists of 12 tracks with ‘Tell Me’ being the title track.
Sakina Mustansir, Hyderabad, Telangana: BTS member Park Ji-min, better known as Jimin, released ‘Promise’ (약속) on December 31, 2018, on SoundCloud. Composed along with Slow Rabbit, it is an acoustic song with soft music, complemented by the angelic voice of Jimin. This is one of those songs that genuinely suits him and brings out the softness in his voice in a special way.
Jubby Kumar, Bilaspur, Chhatisgarh: Much-loved boy band MONSTA X returned with their album Fantasia X on May 26, 2020. The eighth mini-album, which consists of seven powerful tracks, explores the themes of empowerment and perseverance. With Fantasia X, the members wish to create a place ruled by powerful emotions and help people realise their worth.
Ashley Kumar, Delhi: Even if you don’t stan or don’t know much about second-generation K-pop groups, you would have definitely heard about Super Junior’s Kim Hee-chul. He is known as one of the main rappers in Super Junior and is a vocalist as well. He might be one of the quieter ones on stage, but when it comes to variety shows, Hee-chul conquers all. Even big professional comedians like Kang Ho-dong and Lee Soo-geun fail before his quick-witted and hilarious comebacks.
Susmita Sanyal, Kolkata, West Bengal: ‘Yours’ is a much-awaited track that released on May 12, 2020. A collaboration between DJ Raiden and EXO’s Park Chanyeol, the track also features Lee Ha-yi and Ku Chang-mo known by their stage name as Lee Hi and Changmo respectively. It had created quite a buzz ever since the collaboration was announced. The subsequent unveiling of the teasers only added to the fervour.
Archana Goswami, Delhi: I always wanted to attend a K-event at KCCI (Korean Cultural Center of India), Delhi, ever since I got interested in the Korean Culture through K-pop and K-dramas. Last year, I finally got the chance to be a part of an event at KCCI. The admin of Korean Culture India Fan Club, Ms. Prerna Tiwari organised a birthday celebration event for BTS members Kim Seok-jin and Kim Tae-hyung on December 29, 2019. I will forever be grateful to her for organising this event and giving all of us a memorable experience of a lifetime. Around 130 fans attended this event!
